Second Overpass Strike of 2026 Leads to RCMP Investigation; Driver Detained for Hit-and-Run

A truck driver was detained by BC Highway Patrol after crashing into the Blundell overpass on Highway 99 in Richmond. The driver initially left the scene, but police managed to locate and detain them shortly after the incident occurred on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Witnesses reported that an excavator being towed on a flat deck trailer struck the overpass, prompting the driver to briefly stop before driving away. Fortunately, there were no injuries in the incident.

Cpl. Michael McLaughlin emphasized the importance of stopping after a collision to provide necessary information, as per the law.

The overpass sustained superficial damage, according to an initial assessment by BC Highway Patrol. However, the BC Ministry of Transportation and Transit will conduct a thorough examination to ensure its safety.

While delays are expected in the area, southbound lanes on Highway 99 remain open as authorities investigate the situation further.
