Three teenagers from Whitby have been apprehended on various charges following a high-speed chase involving a stolen vehicle, which led authorities to link one of the youths to a violent robbery at a jewellery store in Durham Region.
The dramatic sequence of events took place on the morning of Jan. 17, when vigilant officers spotted a stolen Honda SUV near Twin Streams Drive and Country Lane during proactive patrol.
In an attempt to stop the vehicle, police initiated a pursuit, but the driver evaded them, colliding with a police cruiser before careening into a tree not far from the scene.
Following the crash, all three occupants fled on foot, prompting a swift response from Durham police who swiftly apprehended the suspects in the surrounding neighborhood.
Upon investigation, authorities discovered that one of the teenagers was allegedly involved in a robbery at Peoples Jewellers at Pickering City Centre on Jan. 15, with further attempts at robbing Oshawa Jewellery at the Oshawa Centre on the same day. The investigation into these incidents is ongoing.
The most serious charges have been levied against a 16-year-old boy from Whitby, including robbery, attempted robbery, dangerous operation, failure to stop for police, leaving the scene of an accident, multiple counts of disguise with intent, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, and two counts of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He has been detained for a bail hearing.
