The Law Society of British Columbia has initiated an inquiry following an incident where a lawyer made an inappropriate remark that was accidentally broadcast during a public hearing on the 2015 death of Myles Gray involving the police.
The regulatory body stated that it is investigating the issue, causing the suspension of the ongoing hearing in Vancouver on the third day of testimony. The society emphasized the importance of lawyer professionalism, requiring them to maintain a courteous and respectful demeanor in all interactions.
The hearing, focusing on Gray’s demise following an altercation with seven Vancouver police officers, was scheduled for a 10-week duration but has been postponed until Monday due to the incident where a lawyer was heard using offensive language over the live stream.
The Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner expressed concern over the use of such language in a public setting, labeling it as serious and unacceptable. It advised against speculating about the context or individuals involved in the incident.
While some legal representatives associated with the hearing chose not to comment on the suspension, stating that they did not hear the offensive remark during the session, the situation has prompted further investigation and reflection on professional conduct in legal proceedings.
