RCMP Escorted OneBC Group Off UBC Campus Due to Rising Safety Concerns

The University of British Columbia recently saw a group from the OneBC party being escorted off its Vancouver campus by RCMP officers after they failed to comply with safety instructions. The group, led by B.C. MLA Dallas Brodie, had gathered for a protest event at UBC’s Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre. Counter-protesters were also present, and tensions rose as the two groups clashed.

During the event, Brodie and her fellow party members faced resistance from the crowd, with Brodie claiming she was later assaulted by a group of individuals. The situation escalated further when RCMP officers intervened, carrying away one of the group members horizontally.

UBC stated that the group was asked to leave due to safety concerns, and when they did not comply, the RCMP assisted in their removal from the campus. The university emphasized its commitment to free inquiry and diversity of perspectives, while also highlighting the importance of civil discourse.

The incident is part of a broader controversy surrounding the OneBC party and its members, who have questioned accounts of unmarked graves at residential schools. This event follows a similar occurrence at the University of Victoria, where one person was arrested during an unauthorized gathering, sparking concerns from Indigenous groups about the promotion of residential school denialism.
