The Buffalo Sabres secured a 4-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night at Bell Centre, thwarting the hosts’ comeback attempt.
Taking an early 3-0 lead, the Sabres saw goals from Jason Zucker, Beck Malenstyn, and Zach Benson, with Montreal battling back with two goals in the second period.
Peyton Krebs sealed the win for the Sabres with an empty-net goal, while Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 32 saves to anchor the team’s triumph.
Buffalo (28-17-5) has been on a hot streak, winning 17 of their last 21 games since December 9. This victory marked the Sabres’ second win over Montreal within eight days, following a 5-3 win on January 15.
Montreal’s Cole Caufield and Nick Suzuki managed to find the net, but their efforts weren’t enough to extend their two-game winning streak, with Caufield scoring in his fourth consecutive game.
Suzuki continued his impressive performance, extending his personal point streak to four games with a goal and an assist. Goalie Samuel Montembeault stopped 13 shots but couldn’t prevent Montreal from falling to the Sabres.
With this win, Buffalo is now just two points behind Montreal for third place in the Atlantic Division, with the Sabres also holding a game in hand over their rivals.
