A local visual effects powerhouse, Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) from Vancouver, has made a significant mark in Hollywood with its contributions to all five films nominated for Best Visual Effects at the 98th Academy Awards.
ILM’s executive in charge, Toban Taplan, emphasized their dedication to being creative partners for filmmakers, helping bring their visions to life and telling compelling stories on screen. One of their standout projects, “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” showcases the intricate work done by ILM’s animation supervisor, David Crispino.
Crispino provided insight into the detailed process of animating characters and capturing actors’ performances using motion capture technology to ensure authenticity and nuance in facial expressions and movements.
The team at ILM Vancouver, which initially started in a modest space in 2012, has now flourished into a large studio boasting around 1,000 employees. Taplan highlighted the studio’s strategic location in the same timezone as LA, fostering strong industry connections and attracting top talent to work on groundbreaking projects.
The studio’s remarkable growth and consistent presence in acclaimed films position Industrial Light and Magic as a frontrunner for another Oscar win in the visual effects category.
