Montreal in the Freezer: Intense Snowstorm and Arctic Chill Lock Down City

Get ready for a wintry blast as a significant winter system sweeps through the region starting Sunday afternoon, bringing heavy snowfall, blustery conditions, and frigid temperatures that will linger into Monday evening.

The day will start off cloudy before snow begins to fall later in the afternoon, accumulating around two centimetres by evening. As the day progresses, northeasterly winds will strengthen, creating wind chill values that could dip to as low as minus 26 degrees Celsius.

Overnight, snowfall will intensify, with up to 10 centimetres expected to accumulate. The combination of heavy snow and gusty winds will lead to drifting snow and reduced visibility, with temperatures holding steady near minus 16 degrees Celsius.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), total snowfall amounts could reach 15 to 20 centimetres, with snowfall rates of one to two centimetres per hour overnight. The powdery snow and windy conditions will make for slippery roads, potentially causing significant delays during rush-hour traffic. Drivers are advised to exercise caution and allow extra time for their commute.

Snowfall will persist into Monday, adding another five centimetres before tapering off in the evening. Wind chill values will remain around minus 24 degrees Celsius in the morning, gradually improving as the day progresses and winds calm down.

By Monday night, skies are expected to clear, with temperatures dropping back to minus 16 degrees Celsius.

Looking ahead, Tuesday will bring cloudy skies with a chance of flurries and a high near minus 11 degrees Celsius, followed by a cold and clear night.

Wednesday will see the return of sunny conditions with a high of minus 11 degrees Celsius, though cloudier weather will move in overnight.

Thursday’s forecast calls for a mix of sun and cloud with a high near minus 12 degrees Celsius, along with a chance of flurries in the evening.

Friday is expected to be slightly milder, with a mix of sun and cloud and a high near minus 9 degrees Celsius.

Residents are reminded that snowfall warnings are issued when significant impacts are anticipated, and it is important to stay informed by monitoring forecasts and alerts.
