“Chaos on the Roads: Over 200 Crashes and 150 Vehicles Trapped as Highways Turn Treacherous”

Drivers Urged to Stay Off Roads After Record Snowstorm Hits GTHA

Following a tumultuous 24 hours of extreme weather in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA), the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are advising motorists to avoid hitting the roads on Monday. The region experienced a significant snowstorm, resulting in around 200 collisions and 150 calls for assistance from vehicles stranded in snowbanks or unable to move.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt emphasized that despite the storm passing, driving conditions remain hazardous. Plows are still grappling to clear lanes congested with massive snow mounds. Schmidt cautioned, “The snow may have subsided, but the cleanup is far from over.”

Plows are working tirelessly to clear highways, but the accumulation of snow is posing challenges. Shoulders are engulfed, and ramps remain perilous. Visibility is hindered due to blowing snow, making it difficult for drivers to discern lane markings on the highways.

The OPP anticipates a surge in activity at collision reporting centers as drivers report incidents that occurred during and after the snowstorm. Schmidt highlighted that although plowing efforts are continuous, major routes are still obstructed by snow-covered shoulders and obscured lane markings, heightening risks for morning commuters.

Local roads, streets, and driveways are also heavily impacted by the snow, creating difficult driving conditions. Residents are advised to exercise caution, drive at reduced speeds, maintain focus on the road, and ensure their vehicles are completely free of snow and ice before venturing out.

Schmidt urged residents to postpone non-essential travel until plows can make further headway in clearing the roads. He stressed, “If possible, delay your travel until the plows have completed their work and the roads are safer. It will take time, but we’ve navigated a challenging 24 hours. Let’s continue to do our part to stay safe.”
