A significant winter storm has swept through the area, bringing heavy snow, strong winds, and frigid temperatures as the week begins.
According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), the system is expected to dump between 15 to 20 centimetres of snow, with snowfall rates reaching one to two centimetres per hour on Sunday night. The combination of powdery snow and gusty winds is likely to create hazardous road conditions, potentially impacting rush-hour traffic. Drivers are urged to exercise caution and allow extra travel time.
Monday will see an additional five to 10 centimetres of snow, tapering off in the evening before clearing overnight. Daytime temperatures will reach a high of minus-13 degrees Celsius, with wind chill values dropping to near minus-25 degrees Celsius in the morning and improving slightly by the afternoon as the winds subside.
The storm has led to power outages affecting 2,536 addresses in the region as reported by Hydro-Quebec on Monday morning. Areas such as Côte-Saint-Luc and Notre-dame-de-Grâce have been particularly impacted on the island. Additionally, several schools have been closed due to the combination of power outages and the snowstorm.
Tuesday is expected to be mostly cloudy with light snowfall starting around noon. Temperatures will hover around a high of minus-11 degrees Celsius, with morning wind chills of minus-27 degrees Celsius gradually improving to minus-19 degrees Celsius in the afternoon. Clear skies are forecasted for the nighttime, with temperatures dropping to a low of minus-18 degrees Celsius.
Wednesday will bring sunny skies during the day and increasing cloud cover in the evening. Highs will reach around minus-11 degrees Celsius, with lows dipping to minus-15 degrees Celsius.
Thursday’s weather pattern will mirror Wednesday, with sunny conditions during the day and a high of minus-11 degrees Celsius. Nighttime may see periods of snow, with temperatures dropping to a low of minus-17 degrees Celsius.
The snowy conditions persist into Friday, with a daytime high of minus-9 degrees Celsius and cloudy skies in the evening. Nighttime temperatures will fall to a low of minus-16 degrees Celsius.
