Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have raised concerns about safety on the Highway 7 overpass in Kitchener following two serious accidents, one of which was fatal. The incidents occurred after a heavy winter storm, with vehicles losing control and launching over a snowbank created by plows.
Sgt. Kerry Schmidt of the OPP shared details of the accidents, noting that both occurred on the Highway 7 westbound ramp flyover to Highway 8 southbound. In one tragic incident, a driver lost control and ended up crashing onto the highway below, resulting in a fatality. The ramp has been closed for investigation.
Another vehicle, a taxi cab, also went over the overpass and landed on its roof, causing injuries to one person. Schmidt emphasized the dangers posed by the snowbank created by snow removal efforts, which inadvertently formed a ramp-like embankment. Motorists were urged to exercise caution while driving in such conditions.
The OPP’s message is clear: heightened awareness and caution are crucial when driving in wintry conditions, especially on elevated roadways. The recent accidents underscore the importance of adapting driving behavior to ensure safety for all road users.
