Province Rejects Payouts for Broadway Businesses, Explores Alternative Support Following Crucial Meeting

Following a meeting on Tuesday with members of the Mount Pleasant Business Improvement Area (BIA), the transportation ministry has agreed to explore alternative forms of financial aid to support businesses affected by the construction of Vancouver’s upcoming subway line.

Minister Mike Farnworth, who had previously opposed direct compensation for impacted business owners along the Broadway Subway Project (BSP) route, described the meeting as productive.

Businesses along the Broadway corridor have been vocal about the disruptive nature of the ongoing construction and the significant negative impact on their revenue.

Representing the affected business owners, the BIA has been advocating for provincial funding and finally secured a meeting with Farnworth, although it was closed to the public and media.

During the meeting, business owners expressed their concerns about the construction project, highlighting the urgent need for immediate support. The BIA proposed province-backed bridge financing options to assist struggling businesses.

While Minister Farnworth acknowledged the financial constraints, he expressed willingness to explore potential solutions with his ministerial colleagues to aid the affected businesses.

Apart from financial assistance, discussions also touched upon the delays and communication issues surrounding the project. The BIA criticized the government for the mismanagement of road closures and lack of timely notifications to their members.

Despite the challenges faced by business owners, Farnworth assured reporters that he would actively pursue solutions and collaborate with his ministry to address the issues raised during the meeting.
