Ali and Hina Islam fondly remember their relatives Salman Afzaal, Madhia Salman, Talat Afzaal, and 15-year-old Yumna—known as London’s beloved “family.” Tragically, these individuals lost their lives in a 2021 terrorist attack by a right-wing extremist in London, Ontario. Despite the heart-wrenching loss, the family left behind a legacy of quiet kindness and unwavering dedication to building a better community in Canada.
The Islams reflect on the family’s journey to Canada, from arriving as ambitious students with a young child to their impactful contributions to society. Ali Islam, Madiha Salman’s uncle, praises their commitment to success and generosity towards others, while Hina Islam, Madiha’s aunt, admires their humble acts of kindness that continue to inspire.
Five years after the tragic attack, the family acknowledges both personal growth and continued challenges, especially in the face of rising Islamophobia and hate crimes. They emphasize the importance of addressing underlying issues that fuel hatred and urge Canadians to stand united against discrimination.
Statistics reveal a disturbing increase in hate crimes against Muslims, prompting the family to advocate for proactive measures to combat intolerance. They highlight the need for genuine action, including revisiting legislation like Bill C9 to ensure it effectively protects vulnerable communities without restricting fundamental freedoms.
In the midst of these challenges, the family calls on Canadians to speak out against hate and work towards a more inclusive and compassionate society. They emphasize the role of every individual in creating positive change and stress the importance of collective efforts in fighting against all forms of discrimination.
