A devastating fire broke out at a retirement home in Montreal’s Anjou neighborhood, leaving a 76-year-old woman in critical condition on Tuesday evening.
The incident unfolded on Rondeau Avenue, close to De La Vérendrye Avenue, just before 6 p.m. when emergency services responded to reports of smoke and flames engulfing the building. Firefighters discovered the elderly woman unconscious in her fourth-floor apartment.
Paramedics immediately administered emergency aid on the spot and swiftly transported her to the hospital, where she remains in a serious state.
Authorities have confirmed that the fire originated in a unit on the fourth floor of the building. While the police’s arson division has been called in, initial investigations suggest the fire was accidental, with no signs of deliberate wrongdoing.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing as officials work to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
