Montreal authorities have announced the arrest of five individuals in connection with anti-drone operations carried out near Bordeaux jail earlier this month. The operations, conducted by the Montreal Police Service (SPVM) in partnership with the Ministry of Public Security, aimed to prevent the delivery of illicit items to inmates. Real-time information provided by prison staff assisted in these investigations.
SPVM Chief Fady Dagher emphasized the importance of enhancing security measures around the prison to combat illegal deliveries, particularly the use of drones to smuggle items like cell phones. The police have submitted an investigation file to the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions for further action. All five suspects have been released pending their court appearances.
Quebec’s Minister of Public Security, Ian Lafrenière, underscored the priority placed on public and prison staff safety in light of these incidents.
One of the arrested individuals, 18-year-old Yonadab Tesfaghergish Zemicael, was found in possession of a firearm during his apprehension and has been charged with firearm possession. Further charges may be brought against him.
In separate incidents, two suspects were apprehended on January 16 with a drone, cellphones, and narcotics, while three more individuals were arrested the following night near the Bordeaux jail with additional evidence seized.
Authorities urge the public to report any drone activity near detention facilities to ensure the safety and security of these institutions.
