Surrey Police Service has pressed charges related to a shooting incident that took place on Jan. 1 in the Newton area.
On the night of the incident, police swiftly responded to reports of gunfire near 140B Street and 59th Avenue just after 11:30 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found a man who had sustained a gunshot wound and was promptly taken to the hospital. The injured individual is currently reported to be in stable condition.
Subsequently, a second man was apprehended at the scene. The police have identified the suspect as 49-year-old Chanchal Badwal, who now faces multiple charges including attempted murder, discharge of a firearm with intent to endanger life, and possession of a loaded prohibited firearm.
According to Sgt. Tige Pollock, Badwal was previously out on release when the shooting occurred. Pollock emphasized the importance of adhering to release orders but acknowledged the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. Badwal is currently in custody awaiting his next court appearance, reassuring the community that there is no imminent threat of further violence.
The Surrey Police Service maintains a vigilant approach by regularly conducting bail checks on known offenders, particularly those with a history of prolific criminal activities. This proactive measure aims to prevent instances of bail breaches and enhance community safety.
The victim of the shooting, who sustained a gunshot wound, remains in stable condition and is receiving medical care. Badwal is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 6.
