Christine Fréchette is gaining momentum in the race for leadership in the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ), with Bernard Drainville set to officially launch his campaign this Sunday.
Drainville will kick off his campaign with a press conference at a restaurant in Lévis, the constituency he has represented since the 2022 election.
The competition to succeed François Legault is heating up, with Fréchette already garnering significant support from within the CAQ. She has secured backing from 11 ministers and 13 Members of Parliament, while Drainville lags behind with support from only one minister and eight MPs.
Fréchette now boasts nearly half of the cabinet’s support, with 25 ministers in total, although three remain neutral. Among the 79 CAQ parliamentary members, 33 have already declared their allegiance.
Recent endorsements for Fréchette include Minister of Economy and Energy Jean Boulet, as well as Éric Girard, both citing her leadership qualities and vision for the coalition’s future.
In contrast, Drainville faces an uphill battle to catch up in terms of support within the party. He has received endorsements from nine individuals, including Minister Samuel Poulin and several MPs from various constituencies.
Fréchette’s campaign has been marked by a wave of endorsements highlighting her leadership abilities, vision, and composure under pressure. As the race for the CAQ leadership intensifies, both candidates are gearing up for a competitive run for the party’s top position.
