Four Arrested, Bomb-Making Materials Seized Near Western University; Community on Alert

A late-night trespassing incident at Western University has escalated into a major police investigation involving hazardous chemicals that could potentially be used for making explosives.

According to authorities in London, Ontario, the incident unfolded shortly after 1:30 a.m. on January 24, when police were called to support the Western University Special Constable Service in apprehending a trespasser who had fled on foot on campus. A handgun was discovered at the scene during the arrest.

Further investigations revealed the involvement of a second individual in the trespassing episode, leading the police to a residence on Chesham Avenue near Chesham Place.

Inside the residence, officers uncovered hazardous chemicals that could be utilized in the creation of explosives. This discovery resulted in the apprehension of two additional suspects associated with the property, as stated by the London police.

Jerry Tong, a 27-year-old from Ottawa, is charged with four firearm-related offenses, as well as resisting arrest, break and enter with intent, and unlawful possession of explosives.

Zekun Wang, 26, from London, faces charges of break and enter with intent, occupying a motor vehicle with a firearm, and unlawful possession of explosives.

London residents Fei “Frank” Han, 25, and Feiyang “Astrid” Ji, 21, have each been charged with unlawful possession of explosives.

It remains unknown whether any of the individuals arrested have ties to the university.

Police have executed additional warrants in Ottawa and Gatineau, Quebec, with collaboration from the Ottawa Police Service, Gatineau Police Service, and the Sûreté du Québec. Details regarding the findings of these warrants and any potential further arrests have not been disclosed.

The police emphasized the complexity of the ongoing investigation, which has involved multiple cities and provinces. Due to the active nature of the case, no further information can be shared at this time.
