This year, Quebec’s beloved groundhog, Fred la Marmotte, hailing from the scenic Gaspé Peninsula, delighted crowds by not casting a shadow on Monday morning. According to the time-honored Groundhog Day tradition, this joyful absence indicates that an early arrival of spring is on the horizon.
Fred carried out this annual ritual in Val-D’Espoir, surrounded by eager onlookers who eagerly awaited his prediction.
In 2025, Fred’s shadow had made an appearance, foretelling six more weeks of winter to come.
The roots of this charming custom can be traced back to medieval Europe, where farmers believed that the emergence of hedgehogs from their burrows to hunt insects signaled the imminent arrival of spring.
Last year, the prognosticating rodents of Canada found themselves divided in their predictions regarding the onset of spring.
