Quebec paramedics gathered outside the National Assembly in Quebec City on Tuesday to make a bold statement during their protest. They turned over a retired ambulance, symbolizing their frustration with their working conditions.
Representatives from the FSSS–CSN union explained that the ambulance, although non-functional, was intentionally chosen to represent the challenges they face daily. According to Jean Gagnon, the FSSS–CSN representative, the ambulance served as a visual metaphor for the difficulties paramedics encounter in their work environment.
Former CAQ cabinet minister Bernard Drainville, now a leadership candidate, condemned the protest action, labeling it as unacceptable union behavior. However, the union clarified that the ambulance was no longer in service and was destined for disposal.
The paramedics’ protest aimed to draw attention to the stalled negotiations with the government for their collective agreement renewal. They are advocating for greater recognition of their work and relief from the persistent challenges they face. Talks are scheduled to resume on Friday to address these issues.
