Vancouver is on track to light up the night sky with a spectacular fireworks show this summer, thanks to Mayor Ken Sim’s proposal. Following the cancellation of the beloved Celebration of Light Festival last year, the city is gearing up for a one-night-only fireworks extravaganza.
The Vancouver Fireworks Festival Society had to indefinitely suspend the festival due to financial constraints, losing vital funding and sponsor support. However, Mayor Sim is championing a $2 million initiative to bring back the magic of fireworks to the city.
In a bid to offer Vancouverites a free and family-friendly event amidst economic challenges, Mayor Sim emphasized the significance of such iconic celebrations. He expressed, “What better way to celebrate our city than putting on fireworks.”
The absence of fireworks displays has left Vancouver’s skies dim, with the last showcase at Canada Place predating the COVID-19 pandemic. Mayor Sim reassured that the city’s funding would fill the gap left by the festival’s suspension, allocating $2 million, which includes existing budgetary provisions and additional resources.
The proposal is slated for review by the Standing Committee on City Finance and Services, with plans to secure partnerships and private sponsors to make the grand fireworks show a reality.
