“Quebec Unveils Groundbreaking Digital Platform to Combat Suicide in Partnership with AQPS”

The Quebec Association for Suicide Prevention (AQPS) and the Provincial Centre of Expertise in Information Technology in Mental Health, Addiction, and Homelessness (CETI-SMDI) have collaborated to launch a new digital tool aimed at promoting self-care and preventing psychological distress.

The newly launched MesOutils.ca website offers a range of self-help resources, including a journaling platform, self-assessment questionnaire, safety plan, breathing exercises, and inspirational quotes. Users can also access a “Need help” section for direct contact with counselors through traditional channels like 1-866-APPELLE or suicide.ca. Additionally, a virtual assistant is available to assist users in navigating the site based on their individual needs.

While artificial intelligence (AI) has shown potential in suicide prevention efforts, concerns exist regarding its impact on vulnerable individuals. Hugo Fournier, CEO of AQPS, believes Quebec can lead in this area and is part of a national committee exploring the use of AI in suicide prevention.

MesOutils was developed as a collaborative effort between the public health care network and community organizations to bridge gaps in mental health resources. Jennifer Dahak, co-director of CETI-SMDI, emphasizes the importance of combining various interventions for comprehensive care, noting that not everyone requires traditional therapy. The tool aims to empower users in managing their mental health and preventing crisis situations.

With high suicide rates in Quebec, the launch of MesOutils.ca aligns with the 2022-2026 Interministerial Mental Health Action Plan to address mental health needs and provide preventative support. By leveraging digital tools, the initiative seeks to offer accessible resources and support before individuals reach a critical stage of distress.
