“SAQ Union Sounds Alarm: Calls for Quebec to Halt Uber Eats’ Alcohol Delivery Trial”

The Quebec alcohol workers’ union is urging the Minister of Finance to step in and halt the deal with Uber Eats for alcohol delivery, raising concerns over potential job losses.

The Société des alcools du Québec (SAQ) recently announced a partnership with Uber Eats to pilot the delivery of 150 products in Montreal by the end of February.

While some have criticized the SAQ for choosing an American company, the organization clarified that the decision was based on specific project criteria, not a judgment on Quebec businesses.

However, the local chapter of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) argues that their members, who currently deliver alcohol to SAQ establishments, could handle home deliveries as well. They believe keeping the service in-house would retain tax revenue in Quebec and help prevent job losses resulting from automation.
