Three young individuals are facing serious charges related to sexual assault following an investigation into a troubling hazing incident involving a hockey team in Nova Scotia.
The RCMP in Colchester County disclosed that the alleged assault took place during a team event in Truro, north of Halifax, last October. A complaint was made by a youth on Jan. 30, triggering a swift response from the authorities.
Staff Sgt. Marc Rose emphasized the importance of ensuring the well-being of the affected youths, highlighting the use of a trauma-informed approach during the investigation.
Multiple witnesses came forward with statements, revealing additional incidents involving more victims and witnesses at different locations. The RCMP suspects that there may be additional victims who have yet to come forward, potentially from outside Colchester County.
Three youths have been apprehended and charged with sexual assault with a weapon. One of them faces additional charges of sexual assault and assault with a weapon, while another is charged with sexual assault and assault with choking.
In a statement, Rose expressed empathy for the victims and their families, acknowledging the difficulty of sharing such experiences. He encouraged other potential victims to come forward, assuring them of a supportive and confidential process.
Survivors are urged to speak to the police about their experiences at any time, with access to support services and the option of remaining anonymous through Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers.
