Legendary Blue Jays Voice Buck Martinez Bids Farewell to Broadcasting

After more than four decades in the industry, the iconic voice of Buck Martinez will be noticeably absent as the Toronto Blue Jays kick off their 2026 season.

In an emotional announcement, the 77-year-old legendary announcer revealed his retirement from the broadcasting booth. Martinez, originally from Redding, Calif., began his illustrious career with the Blue Jays in 1981 as a catcher before transitioning to become a renowned color commentator for the team’s television broadcasts.

Reflecting on his decision, Martinez shared, “After much contemplation with my wife, Arlene, we have decided that it is time for me to step down from the booth and embrace the future.” His final game call, Game 7 of the 2025 World Series, marked a poignant end to his broadcasting journey.

Throughout his tenure, Martinez called over 4,000 Blue Jays games, becoming synonymous with the sport during the summer months. His passion and dedication to baseball were praised by Sportsnet president Greg Sansone, who described Martinez as a baseball legend.

Despite expressing a desire to partake in the Blue Jays’ 50th season celebrations, Martinez acknowledged that it was time to hand over the reins. Blue Jays president Mark Shapiro lauded Martinez as one of the most influential figures in the franchise’s history, connecting fans through his storytelling and insight.

As fans bid farewell to a broadcasting icon, the Toronto Blue Jays prepare to mark their 50th season with an opening day clash against the Athletics at Rogers Centre on March 27, 2026.
