Mount Pleasant Grapples with Widespread Construction Turmoil, Extending Far Beyond Broadway Closure

Construction Chaos: Broadway Subway and Other Road Projects Causing Havoc in Neighborhood

It’s been nearly two weeks since the Broadway Subway construction forced the closure of Broadway between Main and Quebec streets, but that’s not the only headache for locals in the area. A flurry of other road projects is causing chaos in the neighborhood, with sewer work in various locations adding to the traffic woes.

Neil Wyles, from the Mount Pleasant Business Improvement Association, is puzzled about how residents are expected to navigate through the maze of construction. “There’s a whirlwind of activities happening here. It’s hard to keep track of everything,” Wyles expressed. He highlighted the discontent among residents due to the surge in traffic congestion in the area.

Adding to the frustration, cyclists are facing challenges on their designated bike routes, particularly on 10th Avenue where speeding vehicles pose a threat. Wyles observed a rise in road rage incidents, with drivers running red lights and taking unexpected turns down alleys, creating further risks.

According to Alex Carrigan from the 1130 NewsRadio Traffic Centre, the escalating incidents on the roads are only exacerbating the situation. “Crashes at these congestion points worsen the traffic flow, leading to extensive detours to avoid the chaos,” Carrigan warned.

Despite the mounting concerns, the City of Vancouver emphasizes the urgency of the Columbia Sewer Repair project, indicating that delays are not feasible.
