Three officers from the Peel Regional Police force have been suspended as York Regional Police (YRP) continue their investigation into the unfolding scandal.
YRP is spearheading Project South, a far-reaching probe that has already led to the apprehension of seven Toronto police officers, a retired member of the force, and 19 individuals linked to criminal activities.
CityNews reported that no charges have been filed against any Peel officers in connection with Project South. The investigation by YRP is extensive and ongoing, with Peel police declining further comment to safeguard the integrity of the inquiry.
Allegations of police corruption and ties to organized crime have surfaced, indicating that officers may have illicitly shared information with criminal elements involved in violent crimes, including shootings.
The investigation was kickstarted in June 2025 when authorities uncovered a murder conspiracy in York Region, prompting the launch of a targeted operation against a criminal network spanning multiple regions. The charges against the implicated officers include bribery, obstruction of justice, breach of public trust, drug trafficking, and theft.
York Police Chief Jim MacSween expressed dismay over the developments, emphasizing the destructive impact of organized crime on law enforcement during a press briefing.
In response to the unfolding crisis, the Toronto Police Service Board and Chief Myron Demkiw have initiated an independent review of specific concerns within the department. Former Special Investigations Unit Director Ian Scott highlighted the potential involvement of additional officers in the corruption scandal, emphasizing the vital role of transparency in rebuilding public trust in law enforcement agencies.
