“National Auto Thefts Plummet by 27% But Further Action Urged: Insurance Bureau Delivers Call to Action”

Vehicle Theft Rates Decrease in Canada Due to Government Intervention

Auto theft claim rates have significantly dropped by 27% in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period last year in Canada. This positive change is attributed to the intervention by the federal government, as reported by the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC).

Data from the IBC reveals that the number of theft claims decreased to 12,887 in the first six months of 2025, down from 17,595 in the corresponding period of 2024. Additionally, claim losses saw a notable 34% reduction from $547.8 million in 2024 to $361.5 million in 2025.

The federal government took action in February 2024 in response to a surge in car thefts during the pandemic years. A National Summit to Combat Vehicle Theft was convened, bringing together various stakeholders such as law enforcement agencies, border and port officials, insurers, and auto manufacturers to formulate a national action plan.

Hanna Beydoun, the auto policy director at IBC, emphasized the government’s dedication to addressing auto theft issues, noting improved coordination with law enforcement, increased focus on organized crime, and investments in anti-theft measures.
