Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered a heartfelt message of sorrow and hope on Wednesday following a tragic mass shooting in a remote town in British Columbia that claimed the lives of 10 individuals and left many others injured.
Addressing the House of Commons, Carney expressed the nation’s collective shock in response to the devastating incident. He commended the bravery of the first responders and RCMP officers who courageously entered Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, facing unknown dangers.
Carney also praised the school staff and teachers for their extraordinary acts of courage in safeguarding the children under their care. He emphasized that during the darkest times, the community showcased the best of the country.
Describing Tumbler Ridge as a close-knit community nestled in the Rockies with a population of around 2,400, Carney highlighted the town’s resilience and spirit. He recounted the town’s history, emphasizing the unity and support among residents during challenging times, such as wildfires and economic transitions.
The Prime Minister assured that federal officials are working closely with B.C. Premier David Eby and local authorities to ensure a coordinated response to the tragedy.
While acknowledging the difficult road ahead with important questions and conversations to come, Carney emphasized that the present moment is for mourning and reflection. He expressed solidarity with the people of Tumbler Ridge and the Peace River Region, acknowledging their unimaginable pain.
Carney concluded by stating that the entire country mourns with them and stands in solidarity. He offered words of comfort and strength to the residents of Tumbler Ridge, urging the community to find solace in memories of those lost and to draw on their resilience to heal once again.
