Quebec Education Minister Prioritizes Combating Sexual Violence in Schools

The Legault government has shifted its stance, acknowledging the alarming lack of attention given to sexual violence in schools as highlighted by the National Student Ombudsman.

In a recent annual report, the National Student Ombudsman revealed that incidents of sexual violence were being downplayed and the existing preventive measures were inadequate.

Education Minister Sonia LeBel, during a press briefing, acknowledged the concerning issues raised in the report pertaining to certain school service centers. She expressed optimism that school boards would make necessary adjustments and pledged to closely monitor the developments.

In a subsequent interview, Minister LeBel emphasized the critical nature of the issue, stating that it demands immediate attention and action.

Emphasizing the importance of the matter, the minister reiterated the availability of resources and training for school staff and emphasized the legal obligation to update violence prevention protocols.

“It is imperative that these measures are implemented across all our schools,” she stressed.
