The spring legislative session in British Columbia has been delayed by the government in light of the recent tragic events in Tumbler Ridge. The Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) observed a moment of silence to honor the victims of the shooting.
Premier David Eby expressed that it is not possible to carry on with ‘business as usual’ amidst the lingering effects of the tragedy. He stated that all parties recognized the need to postpone the Throne Speech on Thursday.
Instead of the typical legislative plans, the Lieutenant Governor addressed the Tumbler Ridge incident during Wednesday’s Throne Speech. However, Eby assured the public that the government will still present its annual budget as planned.
Eby emphasized the significance of acknowledging moments of tragedy and horror as part of the MLAs’ duty to the people of British Columbia. He highlighted the symbolic importance of the legislature in representing the province’s values and direction.
Encouraging unity and support, Eby echoed the message from Lieutenant Governor Wendy Lisogar-Cocchia’s Throne Speech, urging citizens to reach out to those who may need assistance during this difficult time.
Acknowledging the challenges faced by the province, Eby stressed the importance of coming together as a community to provide support and comfort to those affected. He emphasized the role of elected representatives in reaching out to constituents and communities to address concerns and offer assistance.
In response to health care challenges in Tumbler Ridge, Eby mentioned that the Northern Health Authority is working on ensuring access to necessary medical resources for the community in the aftermath of the tragic event.
