“16th Annual Blood Drive Celebrates Black History Month: Round Table Teams Up with Héma-Québec to Save Lives”

This Black History Month, Montreal’s Round Table is taking action by partnering with Héma-Québec for its 16th annual blood drive. The event, held at Plaza Côtes-des-Neiges, aims to increase community involvement and bring diverse blood donations crucial for saving lives.

“This year, being at Cote-des-Neiges was a strategic decision due to its central location and diverse environment,” said Michaelle Bélice, a member of the Round Table, who also donated blood at the event.

Naderge Ceneston, from Héma-Québec, emphasized the importance of blood donation, especially for black communities who may not be accustomed to giving blood. The event saw a positive response, with over 20 blood donations received by noon, including many first-time donors.

Among the first-time donors was Clayton Girodier, who highlighted the impact of a single donation in helping multiple individuals. The event not only encourages regular donors but also emphasizes the need for genetically compatible donors to assist patients with sickle cell anemia, a rare blood disorder prevalent in black communities.

Nadia Rousseau, Executive Director of the Round Table on Black History Month, stressed the significance of giving blood as a gift of love, particularly for those with sickle cell anemia. Currently, over 1,500 Quebecers live with the disorder, with more than 200 relying on regular blood donations for survival.

Despite progress, there remains a shortage of blood donations for black communities. Rousseau aims to increase annual donors to over 20,000 to better support those in need.
