“Local Hero: Tumbler Ridge Man Dies Protecting Friends in Tragic Shooting”

The community fondly remembers Abel Mwansa as a compassionate and curious 12-year-old who tragically lost his life in the recent Tumbler Ridge shooting incident.

Abel, along with his family who relocated from Zambia to Tumbler Ridge in search of a better life, was described as a bright and eager learner by close friend Lydia Mannion. Transitioning from Zambia to the snowy town, Abel showed a keen interest in understanding the new environment and culture, eagerly participating in local sports activities like soccer and hockey.

Despite his young age, Abel aspired to become a hockey referee, diligently mastering the game’s rules and skills. Known for his selflessness, Abel also took on responsibilities at home, caring for his younger siblings and supporting his family in various ways.

Tragically, Abel’s life was cut short, leaving his family and community devastated. However, reminiscing on his final moments, Mannion shared how Abel’s selfless nature shone through as he was helping others, embodying the caring spirit he was known for.

While his family grieves the loss and adjusts to the heartbreaking reality of planning his funeral instead of a 13th birthday celebration, they find solace in their faith, believing they will reunite with Abel one day.
