Toronto and parts of the GTA are bracing for a winter storm that could bring a mix of freezing rain and snow to the region. The approaching system is prompting a special weather statement from Environment Canada, warning residents of potential hazardous conditions.
Scheduled to arrive Wednesday morning, the storm poses a risk of freezing rain particularly for Toronto and the western areas of the GTA. The Dundalk highlands are expected to experience heavier ice accretion, leading to prolonged icy conditions. Environment Canada forecasts a possibility of five to 10 millimetres of ice build-up, which could result in slippery roads and walkways.
As the day progresses, Toronto is anticipated to transition to snow by early afternoon, with heavier snowfall expected north of the city. Toronto itself could see snow accumulations ranging from five to 10 cm. Additionally, gusty easterly winds may lead to power outages in areas with significant ice accumulation, while reduced visibility is likely for regions receiving snowfall.
Residents are advised to exercise caution and prepare for challenging travel conditions, as the storm is forecasted to persist into the evening commute. Although there is some uncertainty regarding the storm’s exact trajectory, Environment Canada urges individuals to stay updated on potential changes in snowfall amounts and affected areas leading up to Wednesday.
Before the storm hits, Tuesday is expected to be mostly cloudy with a daytime high of 3 C, serving as a calm before the wintry weather mayhem.
