“Police Watchdog to Decide on Probe into Tumbler Ridge Shooting Incident”

Following a tragic mass shooting in the small northeastern community of Tumbler Ridge, the Independent Investigations Office in British Columbia is taking steps to determine if they should investigate the incident. The shooting, which occurred last week, resulted in the deaths of nine individuals, including the shooter, and left over two dozen others injured.

Jessica Berglund, the chief civilian director of the Independent Investigations Office, confirmed that they were notified by the RCMP and have deployed investigators to assess whether their mandate allows for a formal investigation. The office is currently examining if there is a possible connection between the actions or inactions of law enforcement officers and the tragic events that unfolded.

If it is found that there is no link, the investigation will not proceed. However, if the criteria are met, the office will thoroughly review all available evidence to determine the sequence of events. Berglund emphasized that the Independent Investigations Office’s role is separate from and complementary to any ongoing inquiries conducted by the RCMP or other agencies.

She expressed gratitude for the community’s patience and assured that their initial work would be handled with transparency, impartiality, and diligence. Furthermore, Berglund highlighted the office’s commitment to refraining from disclosing information that could jeopardize ongoing investigations.

Offering condolences to the families affected by the shooting, Berglund acknowledged the profound loss experienced by the community. The Independent Investigations Office is deeply saddened by the tragic events that transpired in Tumbler Ridge.
