Premier Ford Proposes Shopping Centers Remain Open for Family Day Shopping Spree

Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed interest in potentially changing regulations that currently require most shopping centres and malls to be closed on Family Day, a public holiday in the province.

During a press conference, Ford acknowledged the demand for more shopping options, particularly in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), on Family Day. He highlighted that popular shopping destinations like Yorkdale, Sherway Gardens, and Square One would have seen significant foot traffic if they were open.

The Ontario Retail Business Holidays Act mandates the closure of most malls on nine statutory holidays, including Family Day. Ford emphasized the potential benefits of allowing malls to operate on such holidays, such as providing workers with the opportunity to earn extra income through stat holiday pay.

While recognizing the importance of rest and holidays, Ford emphasized the desire of some workers to work on holidays for additional compensation. He mentioned the possibility of companies deciding to offer this option, potentially boosting the economy.

Ford suggested that allowing malls to open on holidays should be a choice for retail sector employees, rather than a requirement. He hinted at discussions with the retail council to explore the feasibility and implications of such a change.

It remains uncertain whether Ford’s proposal applies to all statutory holidays or solely Family Day. Clarity on this matter is being sought from Ford’s office by CityNews.
