Quebec Police Apprehend Suspect in Tragic Montérégie Femicide Case

Quebec Man Arrested for Alleged Murder of Partner in Domestic Dispute

A tragic incident unfolded in Quebec’s Montérégie region last month, resulting in the death of 40-year-old Véronic Champagne. Police have arrested a 41-year-old man, David Guertin, in connection with her murder following a heated argument at a home in Rougemont.

Champagne’s passing marks the fourth femicide in Quebec this year, adding to a concerning total of six reported femicides in 2026. Guertin is facing charges of second-degree murder and arson, as indicated by Quebec provincial police.

The suspect allegedly stabbed Champagne multiple times, with a history of domestic violence charges against him. Responding officers found both individuals seriously injured and the apartment ablaze, prompting immediate medical attention and further investigation.

Guertin is set to appear in court via videoconference, emphasizing that the accusations against him have yet to be proven. Tragically, Champagne, a mother of a four-year-old child, lost her life in the incident that also resulted in the apartment fire.
