Subway Shutdown Threatens to Shutter Beloved Broadway Eatery, Warns Local Business Group

The ongoing construction of the Broadway Subway in Vancouver is causing concerns for local businesses. Neil Wyles, the executive director of the Mount Pleasant Business Improvement Association (MPBIA), revealed that Bella Bar & Grill on Broadway at Manitoba may struggle to survive the four-month closure at Main and Broadway, with the owner reporting days of no customers.

Wyles highlighted the challenges faced by restaurants during such closures, emphasizing the irreversible nature of lost sales. He noted that other eateries along the same strip are also facing difficulties due to decreased foot traffic. Parking issues and unclear signage have compounded the problem, leading to frustration among customers and business owners.

Despite efforts to mitigate the impact, including reaching out to government officials for support, businesses are feeling the strain. While some meetings have taken place with government representatives, direct compensation for affected businesses has been ruled out.

The construction delays and budget overruns of the Broadway Subway Project further add to the uncertainties faced by local businesses, with completion now pushed to 2027 and costs escalating significantly.
