Tragedy struck a high-rise apartment building near Jane and Finch on Tuesday as a two-alarm fire claimed the life of one individual.
The incident unfolded at a residence on Needle Firway, where flames erupted from a 12th-floor unit, prompting a swift response from emergency services just past noon. The scene quickly became a hub of activity with fire trucks and ambulances converging on the area.
Toronto Fire confirmed that the unit in question was engulfed in the blaze, leading to the tragic demise of its occupant despite a rapid rescue attempt. Details regarding the victim’s age and gender have not yet been disclosed.
Division Commander Robert Hewson of Toronto Fire Services commended the team’s aggressive firefighting efforts and swift rescue operation, expressing regret over the loss of life in the building.
Fortunately, no other injuries were reported, and Hewson indicated that the fire appeared to have been contained to the source unit, emphasizing the complexities of combating fires in high-rise structures.
The building was evacuated as a precaution during the emergency response and subsequent ventilation to clear smoke. Residents have since been allowed to return to their homes following the incident.
Authorities, including Toronto Fire, Toronto Police, and the Ontario Fire Marshal, are collaborating to investigate the cause of the fire and ensure community safety.
