Ottawa Invests $33 Million in Quebec’s Defence Sector, Boosting Local Companies and National Security

Quebec companies to receive $33.6 million boost to strengthen defence industry ties

A total of 28 Quebec companies are set to benefit from a funding injection of $33.6 million provided by the federal government to enhance their participation in national and global defence supply chains.

Industry Minister Mélanie Joly unveiled the initiative in Montreal, following Prime Minister Mark Carney’s introduction of the Defence Industrial Strategy. The funding, allocated to 28 projects across Quebec, will support initiatives such as equipment procurement, marketing campaigns, and infrastructure enhancements.

The largest portion of the funding, amounting to $10 million, is designated for Héroux-Devtek. The Longueuil-based company specializes in designing and manufacturing landing gear for defence applications and will utilize the funds to acquire equipment that enhances its productivity.

The financial support stems from the Regional Defence Investment Initiative (RDII) for Quebec, which has a budget of $64.9 million over three years, with a focus on repayable contributions. Companies seeking assistance must demonstrate alignment with the needs of the Canadian Armed Forces, NATO, or allied nations to qualify for funding.

The funding injection is a part of Canada’s inaugural Defence Industrial Strategy, comprising investments exceeding $500 billion and aimed at bolstering the country’s defence industry.
