Québec Solidaire, a political party in Quebec, is making a noteworthy exception in its candidate selection process for the upcoming provincial elections. The party plans to allow a prominent “left-wing independence supporter,” Alexandre Boulerice, to run in the Gouin riding, currently represented by Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois.
The decision to bend its own rules comes as Boulerice, a member of the NDP, expressed interest in running with QS in Gouin. Typically, QS mandates that women or non-binary candidates run in ridings already held by the party. However, in this case, an exception is being considered for Boulerice.
QS spokesperson Ruba Ghazal explained that this exceptional decision for Gouin will be subject to approval by the party members during a closed-door council meeting scheduled for Saturday. Ghazal expressed confidence that the party will navigate this situation effectively.
While Ghazal did not confirm Boulerice as the specific candidate for this exception, she emphasized that this will be a one-time deviation from the party’s usual candidate selection process.
