In a tragic incident that has shaken the city, Winnipeg police have charged a 14-year-old boy with second-degree murder in connection with the untimely death of an 18-year-old woman over the weekend.
According to the Winnipeg Police Service, officers made the grim discovery of the woman’s body at a residence on Young Street near Sargent Avenue early on Saturday morning, around 7:30 a.m.
The victim has been identified as Avontai Hartleib, a member of the Sachigo Lake First Nation in northwestern Ontario who had been residing in Winnipeg at the time of the incident.
Following intensive investigations by the WPS homicide unit, the teenage suspect was apprehended on Tuesday. In addition to the second-degree murder charge, the boy is also facing allegations of criminal negligence causing death. He has been placed in custody pending further legal proceedings.
