Manhunt Underway: Fencing Coach Victim of Targeted Attack in Markham

Laurent Couderc, a renowned fencing athlete turned coach at a York fencing school, is bravely sharing his story after a harrowing attack in Markham that left him hospitalized.

Originally hailing from France, Couderc has dedicated his life to the sport of fencing since the tender age of 5, achieving numerous accolades on the global stage. Although he no longer competes professionally, his passion for fencing led him to Canada, where he was recruited to enhance the fencing community and impart his expertise.

As the Senior Sabre Fencing Coach at York Fencing Centre on Steelcase Road West, Couderc was accustomed to surprises on the fencing strip. However, the events of February 10, when he was viciously ambushed by three masked assailants wielding an iron bar, left him in disbelief. The unprovoked assault, lasting several minutes, left him with severe injuries including broken bones and intense pain.

Despite the brutality of the attack, the attackers inexplicably did not steal any of Couderc’s belongings, leading him to believe the assault was a targeted message rather than a robbery. York Regional Police are actively investigating the incident, with Const. Lisa Moskaluk indicating that the assault appears to be isolated, posing no immediate threat to the public.

While shaken by the traumatic experience, Couderc remains resolute in his commitment to coaching and hopes for justice to be served by apprehending the perpetrators. He urges anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing the importance of holding accountable those responsible for such senseless violence.

The incident occurred at the strip plaza on 187 Steelcase Road West in Markham. Individuals with relevant information are encouraged to reach out to the York Regional Police or Crimestoppers to aid in the investigation.
