Montreal’s Gender-Affirming Surgery Wait Times Soar Amid Recent Budget Cuts

Montreal residents seeking gender affirming surgeries are experiencing extended wait times due to funding cuts impacting GrS Montreal, a private clinic offering these surgeries in the city. The reduction in financial support from Quebec’s health ministry and Santé Québec from April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026 has directly affected the waiting periods, which can now span from 2 to 3 years depending on the specific surgery.

Dr. Michel Gagner, the clinic owner, expressed concern over the 30% reduction in patient services in Quebec, emphasizing the detrimental impact on individuals awaiting these critical surgeries. Trans advocate Celeste Trianon highlighted the government’s role in limiting access to gender affirming healthcare, criticizing the privatization clause that restricts public system options, leaving GrS Montreal as the sole provider of subsidized surgeries in the city.

Paul Brunet, Chair of the Council for the Protection of Patients, underscored the essential nature of these services, noting the potential life-altering impact on individuals awaiting gender affirming surgeries. The surgeries are conducted at the CMC private hospital center in Montreal.

Trianon emphasized the significant consequences of prolonged wait times on individuals, both psychologically and physically, citing issues such as discomfort and harm from using alternative methods to hide gender dysphoria. Dr. Gagner highlighted the potential severe outcomes, including suicide, resulting from extended delays in accessing these surgeries.

Despite the challenges, GrS Montreal is actively engaging with health authorities to advocate for increased funding and expedited surgeries for patients in need. Dr. Gagner and Trianon expressed hope for a resolution to address the critical healthcare needs of the community.
