“Strike Looms or Deal on Horizon for B.C. Paramedics, Union Vote to Decide Amid Tense Negotiations”

The union representing ambulance paramedics and emergency dispatchers in British Columbia will not go on strike on Thursday, but they are prepared to do so in the future. Members have overwhelmingly voted in favor of potential job action earlier this month.

The Ambulance Paramedics of BC – CUPE Local 873 announced that 97 percent of the union supported the possibility of job action. Communications Director Ian Tait mentioned during a media event that negotiations are currently ongoing, with hopes of reaching a new agreement soon.

Tait stated, “We have been actively engaged in discussions with the government and BC Emergency Health Services to address key issues. While progress has been made on several fronts, a collective agreement has not been reached at this time.”

The union is now in a legal strike position after finalizing an essential service order, which means they could potentially initiate strike action. However, Tait clarified that they have not yet filed a 72-hour strike notice.

Members are advocating for investments from the government to better support paramedics and dispatchers. Tait emphasized the importance of a sustainable ambulance service for the well-being of both the staff and the communities they serve daily.

Updates on the negotiation progress are expected to be provided by the union later on Thursday.
