Hockey Community Rallies in Support After Tragic Events
In the close-knit town of Tumbler Ridge, hockey holds a special place in the hearts of its residents.
Dennis Campbell, president of the Tumbler Ridge Minor Hockey Association, emphasized the significance of hockey in the community, stating, “Hockey is more than just a sport for us. It’s a vital part of our town, especially for our kids during the winter months.”
Tragedy struck the Tumbler Ridge Raptors when 13-year-old Ezekiel Schofield, a beloved member of the U15 team, lost his life in a mass shooting. Campbell fondly described Ezekiel as an exceptional and kind-hearted individual.
Another young player, 12-year-old Maya Gebala, remains hospitalized after sustaining injuries from the same incident. Campbell praised Maya’s resilience and determination, highlighting her as a beacon of strength within the team.
The tight-knit bond among the players was evident, with Campbell noting that his daughter captains the team Maya plays for. The team members, particularly Maya’s defense partner Quinn, have been deeply affected by the tragedy.
In the wake of the heartbreaking events, an outpouring of support flooded in from the wider hockey community. Messages of solidarity and encouragement came from Team Canada, NHL teams, and even the PWHL team, the Vancouver Goldeneyes, expressing their unwavering support for Tumbler Ridge.
Despite the grief and loss, the Raptors are determined to honor their fallen teammates. The players are resolute in their decision to proceed with their upcoming games, with a deep motivation to play in memory of Ezekiel and Maya.
Campbell shared, “My daughter and the entire U-13 and U-15 teams are fueled by a desire to pay tribute to our lost teammates. We will retire Ezekiel’s jersey and play in dedication to their spirits, ensuring that we do right by our kids.”
