3 charged with murder after weekend shooting in Chilliwack

Three men have been charged in relation to a fatal shooting in Chilliwack Sunday morning.

The Chilliwack RCMP and BC Emergency Health Services crews were called to a home on Mellard Avenue shortly after 8:30 a.m., where they found two people suffering from gunshot wounds.

“One of the individuals was pronounced deceased on scene, and the other was transported to hospital with serious injuries,” police said in a news release.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) took over that day.

Hoping to advance the investigation Monday, IHIT identified the deceased victim as 48-year-old Kristopher Benson.

“While the motivation is still under investigation, the preliminary information suggests that this was a targeted and isolated incident,” Sgt. Freda Fong told 1130 NewsRadio.

In an update Friday, IHIT says investigators made two arrests Wednesday with the help of the Lower Mainland District Integrated Emergency Response Team.

“One man in Chilliwack and a second man at a residence in Abbotsford in relation to the shooting,” police explained.

On Thursday, police arrested a third man at a home in Chilliwack.

Since then, the BC Prosecution Service has charged a 34-year-old, a 40-year-old, and a 50-year-old man with one count each of second-degree murder.

“The three accused have also been charged with one count of attempted murder in relation to the second victim,” IHIT added.

On Monday, police said the second victim was in hospital in stable condition.

Court records show the 50-year-old suspect is expected in court Friday afternoon.
