Pre-budget consultations: Quebec community organizations need additional $2.6 billion

As part of pre-budget consultations, independent community action groups are asking the Quebec government to inject significantly more funding into their overall mission, as demand for services has skyrocketed since the pandemic.

The Quebec Network of Independent Community Action (RQACA), which met with the office of Finance Minister Eric Girard, is asking for an additional $2.6 billion for the 4,500 organizations concerned.

These organizations include food banks, shelters for women who are victims of violence, and tenant advocacy groups, for example.

RQACA is also asking that funding be prioritized for the overall mission of the organizations, rather than for specific projects or service agreements. This would ensure greater stability and predictability, said Caroline Toupin, spokesperson for RQACA, in an interview on Friday.

It is not yet known when Girard’s budget will be presented.
