The exchange escalated and the suspect allegedly struck the victim in the upper body with a blunt object,” said Const. Johany Charland, spokesperson for the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal.
The man was conscious and in critical condition while being transported to hospital. His condition later stabilized and his life is no longer considered in danger as of Saturday morning.
Police arrested a 56-year-old man in connection with the assault.
“Officers later located the suspect, a 56-year-old man. He was arrested and transported to an investigation centre to be met by investigators,” Charland said.
A security perimeter set up around the scene was lifted Saturday morning, though investigators continued searching the area for surveillance cameras that may have captured the assault.
