One of the men on trial for the murder of 15-year-old Meriem Boundaoui has admitted he fired shots at the car she was sitting in, but he says he didn’t think there was anyone inside.
Salim Touaibi, 30, testified in his defence Monday, telling the jurors his intention was to scare people standing outside the vehicle.
He says the car’s tinted windows led him to believe there was nobody inside.
Murder trial:
Meriem died after being shot in the head in Montreal’s Saint-Leonard borough on Feb. 7, 2021.
The teenager was inside a stopped car with another person when a second vehicle pulled up and Touaibi opened fire on them. Crown prosecutors have said Meriem was at the wrong place at the wrong time.
The trial heard the shooting was part of a parking dispute between two nearby businesses – a bakery and a hair salon.
Touaibi and Aymane Bouadi, also 30, were both charged with first-degree murder and four counts of attempted murder. They were in their mid-20s at the time of the shooting.
