The West Kelowna RCMP is warning residents after receiving two reports of police impersonation scams overnight.
Mounties say that both callers, one from B.C. and the other from Ontario, report being targeted by scammers pretending to be RCMP officers.
The suspects were spoofing the official West Kelowna RCMP detachment phone number, police say.
In both cases, police say, the suspects — wearing police-style uniforms — invited the victims to a video call.
According to the RCMP, the scammers attempted to get personal and financial information to extort victims for a huge amount of money.
Const. Ash Puri says he is concerned about how elaborate the scams were.
“We want to stress that the RCMP will never ask for money, personal banking information, or private identification details over the phone or through video chat,” added Puri.
Residents who receive suspicious calls should hang up immediately and should not provide any personal or financial information.
